Real Madrid took Chelsea’s place as European Champions last night but it’s not all doom and gloom for Thomas Tuchel’s men.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side earned a 1-0 win over Liverpool in Paris to lift the highly coveted Champions League trophy and it meant that Chelsea would automatically receive a financial windfall.
Eden Hazard had sufficiently recovered from injury to make the bench on Saturday evening, and his side’s win triggered a bonus payment worth an estimated £20 million.
The Belgian moved to Madrid from Chelsea in 2019 in a deal worth around £88.5 million, however the deal was structured to include several bonus clauses, including if Real Madrid won the Champions League.
Chelsea had already netted around £20 million when Los Blancos won La Liga in April, and now their extraordinary double will see Chelsea receive a total of £40 million.
That’s even though Eden Hazard has only made seven starts in the League, and played only 83 minutes in Europe this season.
