Chelsea’s task of qualifying for the Champions League looks like an uphill climb already, but that’s not stopping the new ownership from throwing money at the problem.

Rather than accepting we’re too far behind the top 4, both in terms of points and quality, Todd Boehly has decided to go all out in January to try and close the gap. It shows admirable ambition, but could leave him and his new club in quite some difficulty if it fails.

The January splurge so far, combined with a heavy summer spend, has plunged Chelsea from a very comfortable position in terms of UEFA’s Financial Fair Play protocol to a very risky one.

Some money can be recouped from sales, but without the serious cash that competing in the Champions League brings, the Daily Mail claim our status will be “unpredictable.”

Still, the money has been spent now, and all we can hope is that it has an instant impact on our results on the field
