Chelsea v Southampton

Scorers: Havertz 45′; Adams 47′.

Chelsea needed penalties for the second time this season to progress past Premier League opposition in the EFL Cup.

Kai Havertz leapt highest to head home Hakim Ziyech’s corner to give the hosts the lead on the stroke of half-time.

But within two minutes of the second period kicking off the Saints were level – with Che Adams reacting first to tap home after Kepa had parried Kyle Walker-Peters’ shot.

The teams couldn’t be separated over the 90 minutes and to penalties it went, with 21-year-old midfielder Will Smallbone missing the decisive spot-kick.

Supersub and Eddie help Arsenal ease past Leeds

Scorers: Chambers 56′, Nketiah 69′.

Arsenal eased past Leeds United into the quarter-finals courtesy of goals from Callum Chambers and Eddie Nketiah.

Chambers gave the Gunners the lead 23 seconds after coming off the bench, turning home Emile Smith Rowe’s corner after Nicolas Pépé had flicked the ball on.

And the tie was sealed 13 minutes later, when Liam Cooper’s poor header back to goal was intercepted by Nketiah, who rounded Illan Meslier before the ball trickled over the line.
