Pressure ramps up on Taylor after Chelsea thump City

Scorers: Fleming 1’, Kerr 45+3′, Kirby 52’, Eriksson 55’.

Chelsea closed the gap on leaders Arsenal to just a point after an incredible 4-0 thrashing of Manchester City at The Academy Stadium.

The visitors stormed into the lead within the first minute when City goalkeeper Karima Taieb’s pass to Alex Greenwood was intercepted by Jessie Fleming who slid it past Taieb to open the scoring.

Gareth Taylor’s side recovered well to gain some standing in the game but hopes of a comeback were dashed in first-half stoppage time as a Chelsea counter-attack led to Fran Kirby knocking the ball back for Sam Kerr to finish from close range.

The game was put to bed within three minutes at the start of the second half when Kirby curled home a third before Magdalena Eriksson headed a fourth in from a corner.

It’s now just one win in their last six league games for City, as they drop to ninth.

Reading earn point at West Ham thanks to stoppage time equaliser

Scorers: Evans 21’, Fisk 36’; Vanhaevermaet 71’, Harries 90+2.

There were three headers as West Ham earned an impressive win to move them into the top six in the Super League.

Lisa Evans opened the scoring with a glancing header after a delicious cross from Katerina Svitkova before Grace Fisk doubled their lead 14 minutes leader when she nodded in from close range.

The Royals were second best for most of the game but found a way back into the fixture in the second half when Justine Vanhaevermaet rose highest to head Faye Bryson’s free-kick into the back of the net.

And it was deep into stoppage time when they found their equaliser, and it was another header. Substitute Emma Harries’ effort was adjudged to have crossed the line although the West Ham players pleaded differently to the referee.

The goal was awarded with Reading moving up to eighth after their stunning comeback.

Asante gifts Villa derby win

Scorers: Asante 25′.

Birmingham remain winless in the Super League after suffering defeat in the Second City derby.

It’s now seven games without victory at the start of the season for Scott Booth’s side as Anita Asante’s first-half header was enough to leave the hosts second bottom of the table.

The defender rose highest to head home Sarah Mayling’s corner to secure a victory which sees Villa jump above Manchester City into seventh.

Late winner breaks Leicester hearts

Scorers: Symonds 90+3.

Brighton scored a last-minute winner to move above Tottenham into the top three as a heartbroken Leicester City side remain pointless.

Maisie Symonds’ free-kick floated over the entire Foxes defence before landing in the top corner to finally break down the resilience of the visitors in the dying seconds.

Everton earn draw after Earps error

Scorers: Magill 76′; Toone 9′.

Manchester United missed out on a chance to earn three points as a defensive mishap gifted Everton a draw at Walton Hall Park.

United stormed into the lead through an electric counter attack. Alessia Russo drove through the middle before the ball was laid on a plate for Ella Toone to sweep home.

Everton came close to snatching an equaliser just before the break when Claire Emslie smashed the crossbar with a powerful effort from 25 yards out.

The visitors controlled the game after that but failed to take their chances to move clear and that proved costly in the 76th minute when a mix-up at the back drew the scores level.

Mary Earps came out to collect the ball from a flick-on but an apparent lack of communication with her defender led to Simone Magill nipping in between the pair to guide the ball over the line.

Marc Skinner’s side remain in fifth after the draw while the Toffees move up to ninth.
