Chelsea still have Frank Lampard on their payroll but he must give it up to manage a new club

A report by The Sun states that Chelsea are still paying Frank Lampard his £75,000-a-week salary despite him being sacked last month.

This is due to a new approach adopted by the club in order to save money on paying compensation packages to sacked managers. Instead, the club chose to keep paying the Englishman his weekly wages until July 2021.

The former Chelsea boss would have to give up those wages if he wanted to manage a new club before the end of this season. This is partly why he did not push to be considered for the vacant Bournemouth job. (h/t The Sun)

Another part of the reason why Lampard is content with a short hiatus from management is that he’s been a part of three consecutive intense seasons since he took the helm at Derby County in 2018.

An offer he can’t refuse

He did not do a poor job at either club, in all fairness. The Englishman even guided us to a top 4 finish last season after inheriting a young squad from the outgoing Maurizio Sarri.

Nevertheless, the club still paying his salary means that if he was to manage a new club, it would have to be too good to turn down the £1.8million-a-year wages that Chelsea have been paying him.

He was sacked after a poor run at Chelsea and has been promptly replaced by former PSG boss Thomas Tuchel. The club has seen a change in fortune since the German’s appointment.
