Armando Broja threatened in the opening minutes as he raced clear and took the ball round an advancing Bernd Leno but skied his effort high and wide.

But Mykhailo Murdryk gave Mauricio Pochettino’s side the lead on 18 minutes by chesting down Levi Colwill’s cross and squeezing it past Leno.

Just 20 seconds later, Chelsea doubled their lead through Cole Palmer pouncing on a poor Tim Ream pass out and teeing up Armando Broja to fire home.

The visitors consolidated their lead for large parts of the second half but were still indebted to Robert Sánchez producing a point-blank stop to deny Saša Lukić.

Chelsea’s second Premier League win of the new season moved them up to 11th in the table, just one point behind fellow under-performers Manchester United.
