West Ham have identified Chelsea youngster Josh Acheampong as a player of serious interest ahead of the summer window according to reports.

Acheampong was frozen out by Chelsea last year and was told he wouldn’t play for the club again until he signed a new contract.

However, Acheampong committed his long term to future to the Blues and put pen to paper on a new five year deal in December.

West Ham interested in Acheampong

Acheampong has made eight appearances for Enzo Maresca’s side this season and impressed on his first Premier League start against Crystal Palace in January, before starting the next game against Bournemouth as well.

However, the 18-year-old was then an unused substitute for the next five Premier League games before playing a total of just eight minutes in the wins against Southampton and Leicester last month.

Why Acheampong hasn’t featured more regularly given the injury issues Chelsea have had defensively is strange and it appears he’s now attracting interest from another Premier League club.

ExWHUEmployee has reported the Hammers have a serious interest in the youngster with Graham Potter aware of Acheampong from his time managing Chelsea.

“It has also emerged that the club are interested in young Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong,” he said as quoted by The West Ham Way.

“The defender last year signed a five year deal so it’s unlikely that Chelsea will let him go for a small amount.

“He can play at centre back and right back and stands at 6 foot 5. The player was born and raised in Waltham Forest so not far from West Ham and has represented England at Under 20 level as well as being legible for Mo Kudus’ national side, Ghana.

“Both Graham Potter and Kyle Macauley are very aware of the player from their Chelsea days.”

It will be interesting to see what happens with Acheampong but it doesn’t feel like there’s a clear pathway to first team minutes given the competition for places at both right back and centre back, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the Blues decided to cash in this summer.
