Chelsea centre-back Wesley Fofana has pledged his commitment to the Blues in the wake of summer interest from Marseille.
After the transfer window closed, Fofana went public with the revelation that Marseille director Medhi Benatia had contacted him to discuss a possible move which, as a boyhood Marseille fan, prompted a moment of reflection before he eventually turned down the approach.
“We got a call from Mr. Benatia. And my heart went: boom boom," Fofana told Telefoot in a recent interview.
Fofana went on to confess he sought out Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca to see whether he had a future at Stamford Bridge before he turned down Marseille's approach, and he was left delighted with his boss' response.
"I didn't know if I was going to be part of Chelsea's project," Fofana continued. "But I had a talk with the coach. He told me he was counting on me this year. So I said I was very happy and I was 100% with Chelsea."
Fofana did, however, refuse to rule out joining Marseille further down the line, although it is worth remembering that his first interview saw him admit remaining at Chelsea for the rest of his career is equally as likely as an eventual transfer to the French side.
"It's true that Marseille has a place in my heart," he said. "We'll see."
