Chelsea advanced to the knockout stages of the Champions League with a 2-1 victory over RB Salzburg on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Matteo Kovacic and Kai Havertz were enough to put down a resilient Salzburg side on the night.

The Blues now sit top of the table in Group E, three points clear of their closest rivals AC Milan and knowing that their +4-goal difference will likely be enough to ensure they progress as group winners bar a major swing on the final matchday.

How it happened

Kovacic opened the scoring for the Blues in the 23rd minute after curling a lovely strike into the top corner with his left foot.

However, the Austrian outfit struck back just after the break via Junior Adamu.

With the scores tied at 1-1 and Chelsea looking like they might give up ground as the group’s front-runners, a moment of sheer magic from Havertz pushed the game beyond the home team.

Graham Potter purring in appreciation.

But aside from Havertz’s goal and the positive result for the club, there was one passage of play which really got Chelsea fans up of their seats.

‘Potter ball’ in action

You might remember the ‘Ten Hag’ ball craze. It came about when the Dutchman arrived at Manchester United, and a piece of play occurred which fans thought summarised his playing philosophy.

A video would quickly be edited and launched onto Twitter and fans of the club just ate it up.

Well, Potter is the new manager at Chelsea and that has happened all over again.

Queue, ‘Potter ball’, the silky passage of play which unfolded as the Blues looked to play out of the back and through their midweek opponents.

It was all very impressive with plenty of one-touch action between the stars that ultimately led to a brilliant opportunity on goal.

The chance wasn’t converted but it might just hint at what is to come under the new Potter regime.

If only that had been rounded off with the goal that it deserved and, as a matter of fact, you would have expected more from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in that situation.

Despite the lack of finish, though, keep your eye for more beautiful bits of play unfolding over the coming weeks under Potter as he begins to leave his imprints on the team.
