Edouard Mendy has had quite the cycle packed in to two years at Chelsea.

He went from a surprise signing more notable for his rise from obscurity than anything else, all the way to widely celebrated Champions League winner, who took great offence when ignored in various global end of year awards at the end of his superb first season with the Blues.

Almost exactly since that moment, his form has been in decline, and large groups of Chelsea fans who had been kissing his feet not long before are starting to have doubts now, after quite an extended spell of dodgy moments.

The game at the weekend summed it up – some great saves and some big flaps. He’s clearly got it in to him to be world class, but there’s no doubt his consistency is lacking at the moment.

The news that the club is going to give him a new contract shows where they stand – they’re sure he can push on and get back to the superb form he’s shown before.
