Chelsea are set to make their first high-profile signing under Sonia Bompastor with the addition of Lucy Bronze from Barcelona.
The England international is set to return to the Women’s Super League after two seasons at Barcelona, where the 32-year-old has won back-to-back Liga F and UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, with the Catalans winning a quadruple of trophies in 2023-24.
According to Sky Sports, Bronze has turned down a new deal with the Spanish side in favour of a return to England, having not been guaranteed a regular role amid competition from Ona Batlle.
She will join reigning WSL champions Chelsea on a free transfer when her contract expires this month, bolstering the West Londoners ahead of their first season post-Emma Hayes.
Bronze will add huge experience and quality to the Chelsea ranks having won 123 caps for the Lionesses at international level. She formed part of the team that won the European Championship in 2022 and that reached the Women’s World Cup final last summer.
At club level, Bronze has won eight league titles during spells with Liverpool, Lyon, Manchester City and Barcelona and is a five-time winner of the UEFA Women’s Champions League. She has also claimed the PFA Women’s Players’ Player of the Year on two occasions and was runner-up for the Ballon d’Or Féminin in 2019.
