Chelsea look set to miss out on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang after Barcelona handed the Gabonese international the number 17 jersey.

Barcelona plan on keeping the former Arsenal striker despite signing Robert Lewandowski. The club are prepared to lose Memphis Depay after giving the Dutch international’s number nine shirt to Lewandowski.

The 33-year-old wore the same number while he was at Borussia Dortmund under the management of current Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel.

That previous working relationship is the driver of Chelsea’s current interest in the striker. In Tuchel’s two seasons at Dortmund, Aubameyang was the team’s leading scorer.

In the 2015/16 season, he scored 39 goals and assisted 12 more in 49 appearances for Die Schwarzgelben.

The following season, he netted 40 and assisted five in 46 appearances to lead Dortmund to the DFB-Pokal. It was Dortmund’s first trophy in five years.

Aubameyang scored the winner in that final after Ante Rebic cancelled Ousmane Dembele’s opener. He scored the vital equaliser in the semi-final tie against Bayern Munich before Dembele completed their elimination in the 74th minute.

It is no surprise that Tuchel is trying to bring his former talisman back to London.

They had their issues while together in Germany. Tuchel once substituted Aubameyang in a Champions League tie versus Benfica.

Chelsea and Tuchel now look set to miss out on Aubameyang. They will have to look elsewhere for a striker following Timo Werner’s departure.

Despite his age, Aubameyang could still make a healthy contribution to Chelsea. However, Barcelona have moved to secure the player whose contract runs until 2025.
