Chelsea set to appoint former Real Madrid groundsman | OneFootball

The transfer window is closed, but Chelsea continue to make a splash with their big name appointments across the board.

Earlier this week we heard the rather surprising news that long serving groundsman Jason Griffin – who has been at the club for 30 years – had been sacked. It was puzzling, but today John Cross at the Daily Mirror reports that the club have moved quickly to appoint Paul Burgess, the “celebrity” groundman who worked at Arsenal for ten years as head of their pitch staff before moving to Real Madrid, where he ended up as “director of grounds and environment,” before his most recent role as a “pitch consultant” for UEFA.

We’ve always thought the pitch at the Bridge looked great, and we didn’t see any need to make a change, but clearly these new owners are keen to have the very best of everything. From the owners and the players and coaches, through the upstairs executives to the medical staff and now the groundsmen, everything is changing at Chelsea.
