Chelsea are set to offer Thiago Silva a contract extension following his impressive start at Stamford Bridge, whilst the club are also considering a move for Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez as they bid to further strengthen their defensive options.

Silva signed for Chelsea on a free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain during the summer and the veteran has quickly made a positive impression with the west London side, forming part of a much-improved defensive unit during the opening months of the campaign.

The Brazilian was handed a one-year deal upon arriving in the Premier League but has shown he remains a dependable performer despite turning 36 in September, with Chelsea now prepared to offer the star an extension to his current terms.

According to the Sun, Frank Lampard also remains keen to further add to his centre-back options despite his side’s improved defensive record and the club are keen on a deal for Atletico star Gimenez.

The Uruguay international has impressed as part of a notoriously uncompromising defence for the Spanish side in recent years and is viewed as a potential long-term solution at the heart of the defence, the 25-year-old possessing a perfect blend of both youth and experience.

Gimenez has made 194 appearances for Atleti in all competitions and has twice reached the Champions League final with Diego Simeone’s side, in addition to scoring an impressive eight goals in 60 appearances at international level.
