It’s hard to take your eyes off the Chelsea managerial situation right now.

Just as things seemed to be settling down with Mauricio Pochettino leading us to a 6th place finish and starting to get the best out of the young players at his disposal, he’s been sacked and we’ve been thrown back into disarray.

It’s hard to look back at the season without also looking forward to what comes next. Whoever the new appointment is, they have a very promising group to work with, as the stats show.

It was pointed out in the Sun today that Chelsea scored 51 Premier League goals from players under the age of 23 in the Premier League this season. That’s the most from any team ever in the competition.

The numbers pointing towards a brighter future

Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson dominate the list, with 36 between them. Whoever comes in as the new coach will be forging their attack around these two. Mykhailo Mudryk is a less certain prospect, but he chipped in with 5, as did Noni Madueke.

Then there’s a scattering from elsewhere – Alfie Gilchrist, Carney Chukwuemeka, Levi Colwill and Armando Broja and Moises Caicedo got one each.

The burden will need to be spread a little from Palmer’s incredible 22. We can’t expect him to get that many every year. But Madueke and Mudryk should be able to climb from 5 to 10 each this year, and if Jackson starts next season as well as he finished this season, he can aim for 20 rather than 14.

Then of course there are a host of over 23s to join it, with players like Raheem Sterling and Christopher Nkunku also surely aiming for double figures each.

Overall goals doesn’t look like it’s going to be a huge issue, it’s keeping regular clean sheets that we’re worried about now.
