Chelsea have wrapped up a remarkable deadline day move for World Cup winner Enzo Fernández.
According to an official statement on Benfica’s website, the Blues have paid a British record transfer fee worth €121m for the 22-year-old.
The Argentine has reportedly signed an eight-and-a-half-year deal at Stamford Bridge in one of the biggest moves of the January transfer window. He is set to fly to London on Wednesday, according to The Athletic.
Fernández starred at the 2022 World Cup for Argentina, picking up the Best Young Player award.
It’s been a swift rise to prominence for the central midfielder who only moved to Europe last summer after completing a €14m move from River Plate to Benfica.
He has impressed in his 23 appearances for the Portuguese side, providing seven assists and put in a particularly dominant midfield performance in the 2-1 Champions League win over Juventus in September.
Fernández becomes Chelsea’s eighth arrival of the January transfer window following Mykhaylo Mudryk, Benoït Badiashile, Noni Madueke, Malo Gusto, David Fofana, Andrey Santos and João Felix.
