Chelsea: Roma unlikely to make Lukaku loan permanent | OneFootball

Romelu Lukaku is expected to return to Chelsea at the end of the season when his loan deal with Roma expires.

The Belgium international has had a solid campaign in Serie A with 18 goals in all competitions, though Roma look unlikely to be able to afford the €43m clause to sign Lukaku on a permanent basis.

Tammy Abraham’s recent return from an ACL injury has lessened the need to sign Lukaku permanently and Chelsea could need to find an alternative suitor for the 30-year-old.

Several Saudi Pro League sides expressed interest in signing Lukaku last summer, though the Belgian turned down interest from the Middle East in favour of remaining in European football. According to Gazzetta dello Sport, Lukaku’s desire to remain in Rome could hinge on whether the club can secure Champions League qualification.

Currently fifth in Serie A, Italy are set to receive an additional place in next season’s group stages through coefficient with Roma in pole position to secure that spot. Additionally, Roma remain contention to win the Europa League – and a place in the Champions League next season – after beating AC Milan to reach the semi-finals this week.

Roma need to raise funds in the summer, however, with Sadar Azmoun and Nicola Zalewski among those who could depart to bring in revenue. The loans of Rasmus Kristensen, while Renato Sanches and Houssem Aouar could also move on.
