Chelsea have taken another step towards qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League knockout stage with a 7-0 victory over Servette FCCF in Geneva this evening.

Fran Kirby and Sam Kerr netted braces while there were also goals for Melanie Leupolz, Jessie Fleming and Guro Reiten as Chelsea eased to what could be seen as the most simple victory that they have ever recorded in Europe.

Chelsea were relentless from the first whistle which was exactly what was requested by manager Emma Hayes ahead of the match. Fran Kirby saw a shot saved by home keeper Ines Pereira before smashing the rebound against the bar.

The Blues took the lead in the eighth minute through a beautiful Leupolz strike before Kirby clinically added a second. Kerr then tapped in a third goal before the same player scored again two minutes later as Chelsea took advantage of some woeful home defending to establish a 4-0 lead with just 20 minutes on the clock.

The goals continued to flow with Kirby soon adding her second goal of the game with another simple finish before Fleming continued her impressive recent scoring streak with a fine effort from a narrow angle as Chelsea went into the break with an emphatic 6-0 advantage.

Hayes’ side added a seventh early in the second half with Kerr setting up Reiten to score before the glut of goals came to a surprise end. Drew Spence saw an effort strike the crossbar just after the hour but that was as close as the South West Londoners came to goal number eight.

Servette did end the game with some credit with the Swiss club finally finding their feet during the last half-hour and showing some of their qualities, although Chelsea keeper Zećira Mušović remained untroubled.

The two sides meet again at Kingsmeadow next Thursday for the reverse fixture in Group A.
