Almost three months since the last season ended and Frenkie de Jong’s future still continues to dominate the headlines. The Barcelona midfielder has found himself at the centre of transfer speculation since May, with Manchester United mainly pushing for his signing.

However, in recent weeks, it is Chelsea who have emerged as the Netherlands international’s ardent suitors, with Fabrizio Romano now reporting that the Blues are ‘ready to go big’ for the 25-year-old De Jong.

Chelsea and Barcelona have crossed paths on numerous occasions this summer, rivalling each other for several transfer targets. At the same time, the two clubs have also been discussing deals for players from each other’s camps.

Cesar Azpilicueta was a top target for Barça, but ended up renewing with Chelsea. However, his fellow full-back, Marcos Alonso, will be moving to Camp Nou from Stamford Bridge imminently.

And, if Chelsea get their wish, we could see Frenkie de Jong move the other way, as the Blues are reportedly willing to splash the cash to sign the Dutchman before the transfer window closes.

Fabrizio Romano reports that the west London giants have already had contacts with the Blaugrana as well as De Jong’s camp over a possible move for the 25-year-old, who is being forced out of Camp Nou this summer.

Indeed, Barça have been trying hard to offload the former AFC Ajax ace as it would not only help them generate some major cash inflow, but also free up a large chunk of space on their wage bill, which could help register the new signings.

Barcelona had already agreed to sell De Jong to Manchester United in a deal worth €85 million, but the move fell through. But with Chelsea now prepared to go big to sign the Dutchman, an exit could be in the offing for him, especially with his agent also trying to convince him to move.
