Chelsea have confirmed that plans for a new Stamford Bridge have been put “on hold”.

The west London club have been fighting for years to build a brand new stadium on the site of their current home.

Plans were initially approved, with reported costs going to as much as €1bn.

However, those plans have been temporarily stopped, with the Blues confirming in a statement that they have “no further” plans to invest money into an upgraded Stamford Bridge.

“Chelsea Football Club announces today that it has put its new stadium project on hold. No further pre-construction design and planning work will occur,” they said.

“The club does not have a time frame set for reconsideration of its decision. The decision was made due to the current unfavourable investment climate.”

This news comes off the back of revelations last week that owner Roman Abramovich has been denied a UK visa, with the British government looking to crack down on alleged money-laundering practises by some Russian investors.

Abramovich has since been granted Israeli citizenship, but is only allowed to visit Britain for six months, and is technically unable to ‘work’ for Chelsea.

Whether this is directly linked to the latest stadium plans is unclear.
