The Blues have been up for sale since owner Roman Abramovich announced his intentions to offload the club in early March as a result of the ongoing war in Ukraine.
As a result of Abramovich’s status in his native Russia, the UK Government imposed heavy restrictions on Chelsea, preventing the club from generating revenue from sales channels such as ticketing and the club megastore, as well as preventing the club from agreeing new contracts and signing players.
Negotiations with Todd Boehly and the Clearlake Capital consortium have been ongoing for some time as Chelsea look to enter a new era under new ownership. The prospect of the takeover being completed has now moved a step closer with Chelsea confirming that they have entered a final agreement with their prospective new owners. A deal could be completed as soon as Monday.
The club this morning released a club statement which read:
Chelsea Football Club can confirm that a final and definitive agreement was entered into last night to sell the Club to the Todd Boehly/Clearlake Capital consortium. It is expected that the transaction will be completed on Monday. The Club will update further at that time.
The news will be much-welcomed by Chelsea Women manager Emma Hayes’ with The Blues boss needing to bolster her squad this summer. Chelsea have lost the services of long-serving trio Jonna Andersson, Drew Spence and Ji So-yun, quality players who will need to be replaced.
Chelsea ended the 2021/2022 campaign as double winners. The Blues lifted the Barclays FA Women’s Super League trophy and the Vitality Women’s FA Cup.
