Chelsea are said to be ‘progressing’ in their talks with Sevilla over the transfer of Jules Kounde, with Kurt Zouma offered to the Spanish side in part-exchange.

The west London side have made Kounde their leading defensive target for the summer transfer window and have opened negotiations with Sevilla over the highly-rated 22-year-old, who is believed to be open to a move to Stamford Bridge.

Kounde has established himself as one of the most promising young defenders in Europe since signing for Sevilla from Bordeaux two seasons ago and is reported to have a release clause of €80m (£68.4m) in his contract.

Chelsea are hopeful of striking a deal for much lower than that figure given Sevilla’s finances at present and Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano – who broke the story on Tuesday – has revealed the Blues’ latest offer is around €30m-€35m and Kurt Zouma.

Zouma found himself down the pecking order at Chelsea following the arrival of Thomas Tuchel and could now leave in search of regular opportunities after seven seasons in the capital.

Kounde was linked with Tottenham and Manchester United earlier in the window and was subject of interest from Manchester City last summer, though could now be closing in on a move to the Premier League with the reigning European champions.

Chelsea have already raised significant transfer funds through the sales of academy graduates Fikayo Tomori and Marc Guehi, raising around £43m from the sales of the defensive duo to AC Milan and Crystal Palace respectively.

Should a deal for Kounde be agreed, it will be Sevilla’s second swap-deal agreed with a Premier League team during the current transfer window, having sold Bryan Gil to Spurs with Erik Lamela heading to Spain in part-exchange.
