Chelsea bounced back from their recent domestic cup disappointments as they produced a dominant display in a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at Kingsmeadow this evening.

The Blues returned to the Barclays Women’s Super League summit after Aggie Beever-Jones, Maika Hamano and Kadeisha Buchanan all found the back of the net against The Villans.

Aston Villa were up against it after just four minutes. An early red card for goalkeeper Anna Leat saw The Midlands side reduced to 10 players. Back up keeper Sophia Poor replaced the unfortunate Ebony Salmon before Chelsea went on to take full advantage.

The Blues immediately started to apply lots of attacking pressure and their dominance paid off in the 18th minute as Beever-Jones took one touch before curling the ball into the far bottom corner of the net to open the scoring for her side.

Chelsea doubled their lead in the 38th minute when Ashley Lawrence cut back a low cross towards the six-yard box. Catarina Macário flicked the ball to the near post before Hamano tapped it home.

The Blues continued their dominant display in the second half and they were able to find a third goal just after the hour. Another cross from Macário was met by the head of defender Buchanan whose effort flew beyond the outstretched glove of Poor.

Chelsea kept pushing for further goals and they were unlucky not to extend their advantage again when Poor made a great save to deny Fran Kirby from close range.

Emma Hayes’ side ended the game 3-0 winners meaning that they return to the top of the Barclays Women’s Super League table on goal difference, at least for the time being.

Chelsea now turn their attention towards a UEFA Women’s Champions League semi-final against FC Barcelona while Aston Villa return to action on 28 April 2024 when they play host to West Ham United.
