Chelsea have been active in the transfer window so far, with players moving in both directions. But the Blues are now set to land a payout without lifting a finger.
They could have Liverpool to thank for that. According to the Mirror, the Reds are closing in on a deal to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace as their summer spending spree continues.
If Liverpool wrap up that deal, Chelsea would benefit financially thanks to a sell-on clause they negotiated when they sold Guehi to Palace in 2021.
Back then, the Blues inserted a 20% sell-on clause in the deal that saw Guehi switch Stamford Bridge for Selhurst Park, and it now looks likely to pay off.
Palace have been playing hardball with clubs looking to sign Guehi. Newcastle have repeatedly tried to lure him away from South London, but Palace rebuffed all their offers.
But that could change this summer. There are reports that Liverpool could seal a deal for around £40m.
If Guehi completes a move to Anfield for that figure, Chelsea would pocket roughly £8m. It’s a tidy return for a player who never made a Premier League appearance for the West London side.
However, his development at Selhurst Park has attracted the attention of the reigning champions.
Guehi is heading into the final year of his contract with Palace, so it’s now or never for the Eagles. Ideally, they’d want him to sign a new deal, but that doesn’t seem likely at the moment.
The 24-year-old is now expected to leave Palace this summer rather than walk for free next year.
Palace value Guehi at £70m, but Liverpool are unlikely to meet that price.
Instead, they’re aiming for a compromise closer to £40m, which would still represent a huge profit for Palace, who paid just £18 million for him.
The cash boost could fund further transfer activity from Chelsea. The Blues have already welcomed Liam Delap, Dario Essugo, and Mamadou Sarr.
A move for Jamie Gittens is in the works, having agreed a £55m deal with Borussia Dortmund while there is strong interest in Brighton & Hove Albion’s Joao Pedro.
