Chelsea manager Graham Potter will cause “outrage” if he picks Cesar Azpilicueta over Wesley Fofana again, claims journalist Simon Phillips.

The former Brighton boss chose the Blues skipper over the likes of Fofana and Kalidou Koulibaly in his first match in charge against Red Bull Salzburg, but Phillips is not expecting a repeat of that.

How did Potter’s first game at Stamford Bridge go?

While Potter was pleased with the effort his side put in in their Champions League tie versus Salzburg, the 47-year-old admitted a 1-1 draw was not what he wanted.

“They gave everything,” Potter was quoted as saying by Chelsea’s official club website after the match.

“We’ve only got one point so we’re disappointed with that but I was very proud with how they acted today. It’s not been easy for them either with a change in coach and all that comes with that but their response has been brilliant.”

Chelsea’s draw with Matthias Jaissle’s men means they have taken just one point from their first two Champions League fixtures, leaving them bottom of their group, so it was far from an ideal night for Potter.

What has Phillips said about Azpilicueta, Fofana and Chelsea?

Azpilicueta started the game against Salzburg, while Fofana was named on the bench, and Phillips doubts that is something Chelsea fans want to see going forward.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, the journalist said: “I think purely because of the way Azpilicueta played in the last match, if he starts him over Fofana again, there’s going to be outrage.

“So I think it was purely a first game kind of thing where he went for experience. I think we will see Fofana come back in and other players as well.”

Will Fofana be restored to Chelsea’s starting XI?

It seems inevitable. The Frenchman cost Chelsea a lot of money, with the west London club paying Leicester City £70m for his services last month and handing him a £200,000-a-week contract.

Where did Chelsea legend Didier Drogba start his career?

Galatasaray Guingamp RC Lens Le Mans

Simply put, it is hard to imagine Azpilicueta, now 33 years of age, having a long-term role in the team. When the Blues take on Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park after the international break, you would expect Fofana to start.

If not and Chelsea drop points again as a result of not being solid at the back, then Potter risks facing criticism from some supporters less than a month into his reign at Stamford Bridge.
