Chelsea youngster Carney Chukwuemeka will have to wait for his chance at Stamford Bridge this season, says journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The midfielder joined the Blues from Aston Villa in a £20m deal last month but is yet to play a competitive match for his new side.

While Chukwuemeka has not featured for Chelsea in the Premier League or Champions League yet, he has played in a friendly.

The 18-year-old was handed minutes in a recent behind-closed-doors game against Brighton and managed to get himself on the scoresheet twice.

Although Chukwuemeka has not played in a competitive fixture for Chelsea, he has been named on their bench on more than one occasion, so it may only be a matter of time before he eventually makes his debut for the west London club.

Speaking upon his arrival at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea co-owner Todd Boehly told the club’s official website: “We are delighted to be able to bring him to Chelsea and add such a talented young individual to our squad for the new season and beyond.”

What has O’Rourke said about Chukwuemeka and Chelsea?

O’Rourke says Chelsea see huge potential in Chukwuemeka. However, according to the journalist, the former Villa player will need to be patient as he waits for his opportunity.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke said: “He’ll have to be patient and wait for his chance, and hopefully, once he gets that chance, he’ll be able to go on and establish himself in that Chelsea side. It was obviously a difficult one for Villa.

“They didn’t really want to lose him, but they couldn’t turn down the money that they received from Chelsea. Chelsea do like him. They see huge potential in Chukwuemeka, but he’s going to have to be patient and wait for his chance and hopefully then he’ll be able to take it with both hands.”

Who is Chukwuemeka competing against for a spot?

Right now, Graham Potter has Jorginho, Mateo Kovacic, Conor Gallagher, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Denis Zakaria to call upon.

When he is fit again, N’Golo Kante will also be another midfield option for the new Chelsea manager, so Chukwuemeka faces a tough task breaking into the Blues’ starting XI this season.

However, the Frenchman and Jorginho are both out of contract next summer, so Chukwuemeka could get much more opportunities next term if he impresses Potter in training and the odd appearance he gets now.
