Tottenham are getting concerned that Chelsea could hijack their move for Sporting Lisbon right-back Pedro Porro, according to reports.

Spurs have been attempting to get a deal done for the Spain international for most of this month with reports yesterday insisting that the north London club were ‘growing in optimism’ over sealing a transfer.

Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano said on Wednesday that he expects a “push” from Tottenham again on Thursday for the Spanish defender.

“Tottenham will push again for Pedro Porro – they are ready to offer players to Sporting Lisbon, but they only want money,” Romano said in his Caught Offside column.

“A swap deal won’t be easy, but Spurs remain optimistic and will push again for this deal in the next 24 hours.”

The Daily Mail have revealed that Tottenham had a £32.5m bid for Porro rejected but they now ‘want to wrap up a transfer today’ over ‘fears Chelsea could hijack the move’.

Spurs were ‘knocked back but talks with the Portuguese side will resume on Wednesday morning over a revised structure of payments, plus bonuses and a possible player in return’.

Chelsea, who have already beaten other clubs to last-minute transfers this month, are understood to be ‘lurking if Tottenham’s move breaks down, but the player’s agent is focusing on Spurs first and seeing whether the clubs can agree a fee before discussing any alternative options’.

Porro has emerged as Spurs’ ‘main target for this window’ with the Daily Mail adding: ‘Sporting have been previously pointing to his buy-out clause of £40m, but it is understood there may be a softening in their stance if Tottenham can reach £30m plus bonuses.’

Tottenham made a hijack of their own this week when they landed Arnaut Danjuma – who had been for a medical at Everton – on loan from Villarreal until the end of the season.

And Tottenham’s FA Cup-winning captain Gary Mabbutt thinks Spurs boss Antonio Conte is throwing everything at ending the club’s long trophy drought.

“Looking at the teams left in the FA Cup, I feel we have a great opportunity,” Mabbutt told the PA news agency.

“This season in the FA Cup we have a fantastic opportunity and we are also in the last 16 of the Champions League with a game against (AC) Milan, who are beatable so yes, the cups could be very exciting for us.

“I think Antonio has set his mind on winning something this season and we’ll be throwing everything to do it. We haven’t had a trophy for a while now and it is time we had a trophy.

“Antonio has done it with the last few clubs he has been to and he is working as hard as he can through the training we’re doing, the players we’re bringing in and getting players back from injury as quick as we can to make sure this season we have a great chance to win a cup.”
