Robert Sanchez has had a tough time since coming to Chelsea two years ago.

There were eyebrows raised when we signed him, and those doubts have only grown through two seasons which have largely seen him struggle. This summer, strong links to Mike Maignan of AC Milan won’t have made him feel any more comfortable.

Given the endless complaints about Sanchez, it’s interesting to get a glimpse of his perspective, and that’s just what’s come today from the club’s tour diary in the USA. The goalkeeper revealed some of his inner thoughts about being one of the older players in the squad.

“I’m 27 years old – only Tos[in Adarabioyo] is the same age in the squad – so it’s important for me to help lead, and to offer guidance and support,” the Spaniard wrote for the club’s official website.

“That isn’t just with the goalkeepers; it’s for the whole team. We have had some challenges over the last two seasons, which is normal during a rebuild, but we’ve celebrated some great moments and created memories for the supporters.”

Doubts about Sanchez grow – but he’s not going anywhere

Despite being a senior player in the dressing room, there are real and serious doubts about Sanchez’s ability.

For now he’s safe, however. The main threats to him as first choice were a new signing (and with the death of the Maignan links, it looks like that may not happen), and the return of Djordje Petrovic. But the Serb has been left off the tour in order to find a new team, so he looks out of the picture too.

Against all odds, Sanchez could be going into this season as number one again.
