One Chelsea player has the ability to elevate himself to being a superstar and could then go ahead of Phil Foden in terms of levels.
That is according to one former Chelsea player and manager turned pundit this week.
Foden is a quality player, there are no doubts about that. But Glenn Hoddle, who once played for Chelsea and then managed them as well in the 90s, believes that Palmer’s ceiling is higher than Foden and he can become a better player and get ahead of him in the England setup.
Palmer arrived onto the scene in the Premier League last season when he signed for Chelsea. Of course, he did play Premier League matches for Manchester City when he was there. But in terms of really making a name for himself and exploding onto the scene, he did that at Chelsea basically carrying through some games last season as their talisman.
Foden and Palmer would actually be ideally playing and starting in the same England team, but is there room for them both?
Palmer has been on fire at Chelsea
“I’ve always rated Phil Foden as a top player,” Hoddle said while speaking on the Stick to Football podcast.
“He hasn’t played so well in the Euros and hasn’t done what I thought he would do. I think Foden is a special talent but its whether he can reproduce what he’s doing at City in an England shirt.
“Cole Palmer looks unbelievable. He’s an interesting one because if he stays unattached to the game, because for me he’s a player that plays in the playground, he could elevate himself to being a superstar and could go ahead of Foden in many ways.
“The question mark is if he can continue to do that over the coming seasons because we all know what’s coming for him, the journey he’ll be taking with the ups and downs, injuries he might get, dip in form – there is a multitude of things he has to come through to be the superstar I think he is.”
