Chelsea played this January transfer perfectly and will get major reward this summer

Chelsea’s January was dominated by outgoing loans for players who had been fringe players for the first team, and they’ve been a mixed bag so far.

Renato Veiga had a great start at Juventus and then got injured, but is now fit to return again. Joao Felix scored on his debut for AC Milan but is now being blamed as part of the problem as their season starts to fall apart. Carney Chukwuemeka has had some impressive cameos but still hasn’t been trusted with anything more than that.

The one unqualified success has been Axel Disasi’s Premier League switch to Aston Villa. He had a few options on the table but seems to have chosen wisely. He’s been an ever present for them, either at right back or centre back, both in the Champions League and Premier League.

On Wednesday he faces a winnable second leg against Club Brugge to make it into the quarter finals – that’s pretty impressive work given Chelsea haven’t made it that far in a while.

It’s no wonder, then, that FootMercato in France are today writing that Villa are already keen to make his loan deal permanent in the summer. The plan has worked out perfectly, with Disasi continuing to juice up his value by playing consistently in big games rather than sitting on Chelsea’s bench.

If anything, Villa may struggle to keep him simply because there are now “several” Premier League teams interested. They should be in pole position given they will have European football and a big wage budget, but there’s no telling who else might get involved.

From Chelsea’s perspective, it’s job done as they look to clear out space in the squad for a potential elite arrival in that position.
