For various reasons, Mauricio Pochettino picked an attacking trio for Chelsea today consisting of Nicolas Jackson, Raheem Sterling and Armando Broja against Wolves.

So far, it’s been as painful as you’d expect. Each of them has fluffed at least one chance, and a game which should be 3-0 remains 0-0 at half time. We all know what comes next – a vastly improved Wolves second half, a goal for the home team, a Chelsea collapse, and another glum press conference.

The point is that if these three were just plain bad it would be tolerable. Instead, each has specific qualities which make them very good at creating chances from nothing.

The problem is that they also are all dreadful at taking those chances. The combination of those two factors make them remarkably, possibly even historically, wasteful. xG tells you part of the story, but there’s really no stat which can truly encompass the depths of the frustrations they generate from fans.
