Chelsea have opened ‘official talks’ with Sevilla over a deal for highly-rated defender Jules Kounde.

Thomas Tuchel is keen to strengthen his squad with the signing of a new centre-back and discussions are underway over a deal for Kounde, who has established himself as one of the best young defenders in Europe since signing for Sevilla from Bordeaux.

Chelsea have so far been quiet in the transfer market but could now begin their summer business with a move for the France international, who formed part of Les Bleus squad at Euro 2020.

Italian journalist, Fabrizio Romano, has revealed ‘official talks’ between the two clubs have began, with Kounde keen on a move to Stamford Bridge as he looks to continue playing Champions League football.

The 22-year-old – who is comfortable centrally and at right-back – was subject of interest from Manchester City last summer, whilst Tottenham have been linked with a move during the current window.

Despite being close to adding Raphael Varane to their ranks, Manchester United have also claimed to be interested in signing Kounde as an addition to the Real Madrid man, though the club may have to sell before making further additions.

Kounde signed for Sevilla two seasons ago in a deal worth €25m and has since made 88 appearances in all competitions, with reports having suggested the Spanish side will seek a bid of around £60m for the defender.
