Chelsea centre-back Thiago Silva’s contract extension should get signed “very soon” at Stamford Bridge, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

The 38-year-old is currently in the final six months of his current £110,000 per-week deal with Graham Potter’s side.

According to 90min, Chelsea and Thiago Silva have agreed on terms to extend the veteran centre-back’s contract by 12 months with the club.

The same report suggests that the Brazilian is willing to put pen to paper on a new deal as he and his family are enjoying life in London, having arrived at Stamford Bridge from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2020.

Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has recently told GiveMeSport that head coach Potter will be given financial backing in the transfer market and extending the contract of Silva is something that will have pleased the former Brighton & Hove Albion boss.

And Phillips has said that he would be surprised if Silva doesn’t sign his new deal “very soon” as Chelsea look to seal the experienced defender’s future.

What has Phillips said about Chelsea and Silva?

Phillips told GiveMeSport: “I’d be surprised if that doesn’t get done very soon. He will pen a new one-year extension at Chelsea and that will be massive.

“I’ve been a little bit in the middle on this one. I thought at the age of 38, he’s going to be 39 next season, is it worth getting him on a new deal?

“But he’s been consistently our best player again this season and there are no signs of any decline at all for his age.”

How has Silva performed for Chelsea this season?

Silva – who has been dubbed as a “Rolls-Royce” of a defender by pundit Joe Cole – has been in excellent form for the Blues this season, despite the side’s disappointing showings in the Premier League.

The Rio de Janeiro-born star has started in 85% of Chelsea’s top-flight fixtures this season, a stunning record for somebody nearing the age of 40.

The 113-cap Brazil international has earned himself an average WhoScored rating of 7.06 for his showings in the Premier League this term, ranking as Potter’s fifth-best-performing player in the squad, displaying that he can still be a vital member of the team even as he nears the end of his career.

And the former AC Milan stalwart compares favourably with his positional peers, ranking in the top 3% of centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League for passes attempted (83.06) and top 6% for pass success rate per 90 minutes (91.7%) over the last 365 days, as per FBref.

Therefore, it’s easy to see why Chelsea fans will be so delighted when Silva puts pen to paper on a 12-month contract extension at Stamford Bridge, with Potter’s young side benefitting from some valuable experience at the back.
