Chelsea signed Romeo Lavia for £53 million from Southampton and expected him to stake a major claim in the playing XI after his standout performances for his former club. However, the Blues have not gotten what they expected from him. Lavia has not yet found his footing at Stamford Bridge and is a rotational player for the club. Moises Caicedo is the first-choice defensive midfielder and Lavia is a backup for him.
There were reports that the midfielder might be moving away from the club. However, Team Talk has reported that Chelsea are not interested in selling Lavia anytime soon. They want to trust the potential that he has shown during his stint at Southampton and want to retain him.
However, the Blues will need to give more game time to the player on the first team or another way out can be made by loaning him to a club where he can play regularly. Lavia has not scored any goals so far in the Premier League 2024/2025 season.
He has assisted one goal in 10 matches so far in the Premier League 2024/2025 season. Looking into his passing aspect of the game, Lavia passes the ball roughly 47.68 times during a game with a pass completion rate of 91.93%. He also plays 1.00 key passes each game. Overall, Lavia’s xA (expected assists) output is 0.22 per 90 minutes. Lavia has received just 538 minutes of game time in the ongoing Premier League season.

If we talk about his traits and qualities, Lavia is a defensive midfielder with remarkable composure and versatility. He navigates tight spaces effortlessly, evading pressure with fluid directional changes and precise short passes. Additionally, his long-range passing unlocks advanced teammates, displaying a playmaking flair rare for his position.
Lavia presses aggressively, winning duels and recovering possession with tenacity, yet maintains disciplined positioning to shield the backline. His technical skill rivals that of an attacking midfielder, while his athleticism and intelligence fuel a high work rate. At just 21, his blend of ball retention, defensive grit, and progressive vision marks him as a modern midfield standout with immense potential.
Chelsea’s decision to not sell him shows that they still trust him. He has huge potential but he needs to play regularly at this point. Not getting regular minutes will hinder his progress. So, it remains to be seen how his future turns out at Chelsea.
