Chelsea’s goalkeeping situation remains a mystery, and not one that we expect to be cleared up anytime soon.

Robert Sanchez made some huge saves on Saturday to keep his team ahead against Everton, but after two dodgy seasons, one good game here and there won’t be convincing anyone that he’s the future, let’s face it.

There are other options – the Blues have young Filip Jorgensen on the bench, although frankly at this stage nothing we’ve seen from him makes us think he’s the future either.

Young Mike Penders is just starting his senior career, and for all his promise we don’t see him as a serious option yet either. Djordje Petrovic has done well on loan at Strasbourg, and could also get another shot.

All the reports which come from the briefs leaking out of the club say they’re happy with the options they’ve got – but that’s not stopping an endless stream of rumours linking us to other options. Last week Porto’s Diogo Costa had his name raised repeatedly, and over the weekend it was Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel we heard most about.

Kobel and Costa both top options on the market

It was FootMercato in France which had the first reports that the 27 year old could be on the way out, and that Dortmund had already signed Diant Ramaj from Ajax as his replacement.

Yesterday, Fichajes added their own weight to the story, saying that the Blues had already made a €55m offer and were now just waiting for Dortmund’s response.

We really rate both Kobel and Costa. As promising as Penders is, he’s not ready. As improved as Petrovic is, he doesn’t have the pedigree of these two. Given how much money we’ve spent elsewhere dropping €50m or so on an elite stopper looks a smart decision to us.
