Chelsea have confirmed that Enzo Fernandez will miss the remainder of the Premier League season after undergoing surgery on a groin issue.
The Argentina international was substituted during Chelsea’s 5-0 defeat at Arsenal on Tuesday and the club’s medical staff have decided surgery is required to correct the issue.
Fernandez has undergone a ‘successful’ operation to fix the complaint and will begin his rehabilitation at Cobham ahead of returning next season.
“Enzo Fernandez has today undergone successful surgery on a groin issue and will now begin a period of rehabilitation, sidelining him for the remainder of Chelsea’s 2023/24 season,” a club statement read.
“The 23-year-old midfielder will work with the club’s medical department on his rehabilitation at Cobham.”
Fernandez’s absence curtails a mixed first full season in West London for the midfielder. He has scored twice and provided three assists in 28 Premier League appearances, for a Chelsea side who have struggled for consistent results and performances under Mauricio Pochettino.
Chelsea broke the then-British transfer record to sign the World Cup winner from Benfica for a fee of around £106m in January 2023.
