Chelsea issue Cesar Azpilicueta injury update | OneFootball

Chelsea have confirmed that Cesar Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital after suffering a concussion injury in the 1-0 defeat to Southampton.

The Spaniard lay motionless on the pitch after a nasty collision with Sekou Mara, who was attempting an overhead kick, which left him unconscious.

Azpilicueta received oxygen treatment for several minutes before being stretchered off the pitch. He was conscious as he left the field before being replaced by Trevoh Chalobah.

Chelsea have now confirmed that the club captain is back on his feet after being pictured at the Cobham training base, although he did not take part in any exercise.

“Following a concussion injury sustained during Saturday’s game against Southampton, César Azpilicueta has been discharged from hospital and is recovering well at Cobham,” the club statement read.

“The club’s medical team are closely monitoring César’s condition, adhering to the important concussion protocols in place to ensure his safety.

“César observed training today before he starts working towards returning to the pitch.”

Azpilicueta’s return will come as a boost to Graham Potter, whose future at the club remains in a precarious position despite public backing from the club owners.

Last weekend’s humiliating defeat to bottom-placed Southampton left the Blues with two wins from their last 14 games in all competitions.

Chelsea’s awful form has caused a divide amongst the club faithful, with a section of the fans calling for Potter’s sack and the other willing to be patient.

However, it is understood the next couple of games could make or break Potter’s tenure, with the blues set to face Tottenham Hotspur up next in the London derby.

The Football Association’s rules around concussion protocols put the earlier return date for a player at six days.

Azpilicueta could miss the game against Spurs on Sunday as a precaution but may return against Leeds United on March 4.
