Chelsea are in negotiations with Benfica over the signing of highly-coveted midfielder Enzo Fernandez, according to reliable Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Fernandez has seen his value skyrocket following a sensational World Cup campaign, where he was instrumental in Argentina lifting the title as well as bagging the best young player of the tournament award.

The 21-year-old’s rise to prominence has also caught the attention of a host of European giants, who are ready to meet Benfica’s €120 million valuation.

Chelsea appear to have jumped the queue as Romano reports that Fernandez has given the green light for his move to Stamford Bridge.

The Blues are now looking to reach an agreement with the Portuguese giants, although they are only willing to pay a huge sum in instalments instead of exercising the Argentine’s release clause.

Manchester United, Liverpool and Real Madrid have all been credited with an interest in Fernandez, but none have submitted any formal offer.

The Blues are among the active sides in the transfer market as Todd Boehly aims to build one of the best squads in Europe.

Christopher Nkunku will move to Stamford Bridge next summer, while the west London club recently completed the signing of David Datro Fofana. A deal for Brazilian wonderkid Andrey Santos is also imminent.

Chelsea are also the front-runners to sign Monaco centre-back Benoit Badiashile and Atletico Madrid’s Joao Felix, which means they are likely to embark on a spending spree.

Fernandez will be a much-needed addition to the squad, given the uncertain futures of N’Golo Kante and Jorginho – who are out of contract next summer.
