Chelsea are in talks with Thiago Silva, who is set to captain Paris Saint-Germain in Sunday’s Champions League final.
The match will be Silva’s last for the French club before his contract expires, with Chelsea keen on a signing him for free.
According to the Athletic, the Blues have been in “advanced talks” for Silva, who will turn 36 one week into the new Premier League season.
Contract length could be a problem, the report adds, with Silva still confident of his abilities at the highest level but Chelsea usually reluctant to offer deals of more than one year to players over 30.
However, they could make an exception in this case, as they did with David Luiz a year ago before his move to Arsenal.
Frank Lampard is desperate to add a centre-back this summer after the Blues conceded more Premier League goals in 2019/20 than in any season since 1997.
Silva has been at PSG since 2012 but the Ligue 1 club have decided not to offer him a new contract.
