Chelsea started the game well but struggled to create clear chances, with Robert Sanchez denying Kai Havertz before Christian Pulisic fired wide from a presentable position.

But Brighton had their moments and almost broke the deadlock through Yves Bissouma, when his effort deflected off Jorginho and onto the roof of the net.

And it was the visitors who emerged strongest after half time with Adam Lallana going close after Kurt Zouma clumsily lost possession close to his own goal.

Then after some more slack play – this time from Jorginho – Danny Welbeck bursted through and curled brilliantly onto the post, before his follow-up was saved on the line by Zouma.

Olivier Giroud shot wide late on before Ben White was sent off for Brighton, but the scoreline stayed goalless with the Blues suffering a slight hiccup in their top four hopes.
