Chelsea have huge decision over €100m winger insider says they’ve watched “several times”

CaughtOffside are today reporting that Chelsea are in the mix for Jaime Gittens the Borussia Dortmund winger, but will have to spend a vast amount to sign him.

The English kid is proving to be one of the young stars of the season in Europe, and the Blues have long been linked with interest in him. That’s only likely to ramp up further now that Joao Felix has been shipped out and Mykhailo Mudryk banned. There are already doubts about whether Jadon Sancho, Noni Madueke and Pedro Neto have world class potential too.

Apparently offers of €80m have already been turned down by the Germans, who are holding out for €100m, with Bayern Munich and Manchester United also interested, boosting the price up further. Fabrizio Romano reported earlier this year that we’ve had scouts watch him “several times”, and everything seems to be coming together for a serious summer assault.

Chelsea have decision to make over winger talent

Chelsea already have 2 players signed for more than £100m in the form of central midfield partnership Moises Caicedo and Enzo Fernandez. While the former is having a great season and the latter has had moments too, it’s pretty clear that the huge price tags were a burden on them, especially at first.

If you look at a long list of football’s most expensive transfers, very few of them worked out at all, and almost none of them were actually worth the money. While Gittens looks a really good player, Chelsea will have to think long and hard about sanctioning a deal of that size given the history and context.

Given they’re still climbing out of an FFP hole created by so much spending, do they really want to make a vast outlay like this now?
