The Chelsea interest in Alejandro Garnacho first came up in January, and it still won’t go away.
We’ve signed signed Jamie Gittens, added Estevao Willian and look to soon add Xavi Simons too. But that’s not putting off our sporting directors, it seems. And the Argentine is desperate to join.
Matt Law went on the London is Blue podcast and explained a little more about the winger’s situation.
“I’m told Garnacho wants Chelsea. He wants to stay in the Premier League, ideally play in the Champions League,” Law said.
“He has set his heart on Chelsea if possible. I don’t know whether Enzo Fernandez is involved in terms of background checks. But the homework’s been done.”
This backs up what Fabrizio Romano wrote earlier today – that Chelsea is the “priority” for Garnacho, who could end up turning down other offers and waiting until the deadline to see if the Blues make a decisive move. This feels like a deadline day transfer waiting to happen.
You can see Law speaking in the clip embedded here:
It’s slightly tough to put one’s finger on what it is that everyone thinks is so bad about Garnacho’s character. The fact that Manchester United are so keen to get rid of him, and that their manager Ruben Amorim is the one opening the door is hardly promising. His flashy hair and style certainly lend themselves to the image of an egotist who maybe won’t graft for the team as much as he should.
But is all that fair? We’re not so sure. It feels like he’s being harshly judged here. But it’s no surprise that Chelsea are doing their due diligence on his personality, potentially contacting his international teammate Enzo Fernandez, before they commit to signing him.
