Chelsea have been pushing for summer move for Leeds winger since January – but may have missed their chance

Fabrizio Romano’s column on Caughtoffside always has some interesting Chelsea bits in, and today it’s about Leeds winger Raphinia.

The Brazilian has been a shining light in Yorkshire, a rare standout in a season where they’ve struggled. If they go down, however, he has a €25m release clause, and no shortage of interested parties, especially at that price.

Romano claims that Chelsea have been “pushing for Raphinia since January,” but the sanctions on Roman Abramovich “froze negotiations, and Barca are now leading the race.”

Of course, Leeds’ relegation opens up a cheaper deal for the winger, but that money is worthless compared to the potential for winning a trophy that signing him would have added, to say nothing of the fact that the delay has opened the door for Barcelona to make their move – potentially decisively.

Chelsea have so close to greatness this season, and it’s painful to think what a dangerous attacking signing could have added to their squad at a crucial moment.
