And in the aftermath, he was eager to thank his family and friends for standing by him as he battled in the early years of his pro career in France's lower divisions.

Quoted by Foot Mercato, he said, "It's quite exceptional. I feel like I'm living a daydream! I gave myself the means to experience this kind of match. I take that as a reward for myself and my family, the people who were there when things were wrong."

Mendy also took a moment to thank Chelsea goalkeeper coach Christophe Lollichon and transfers chief Petr Cech, whom both scouted and pushed to sign him from Rennes last summer.

He continued: "I have a thought for Christophe Lollichon and Petr Cech who pushed for me to sign here. For a footballer, the Champions League is the pinnacle. It's extraordinary when you know that the club has won it only once."

Finally, Mendy paid tribute to Chelsea's former manager Frank Lampard and assistant coach Jody Morris for helping him settle so quickly at Stamford Bridge last summer.

He added: "I take this opportunity to thank Frank Lampard and Jody Morris, we started the season with them."

Mendy, 29, played 45 games for Chelsea this season, keeping 25 clean sheets.
