Chelsea’s defensive collapse in December only lasted for four games, but it cost them a lot.
Having previously allowed less than 1 Expected Goals per game, all the way back to the win over Brentford in October, in four games against Watford, West Ham, Zenit and Leeds the Blues conceded 1, 1.8, 2.1 and 1.4 respectively. That’s a huge jump, especially considering the mediocre opposition.
Thomas Tuchel seems to have righted the ship in the last two games – against Everton and Wolves the scores were down to 0.4 and 0.3, and the only goal conceded was from a set piece.
But we still only managed two points from those two games because we didn’t get the job done at the other end of the pitch. Much like in the Spring this year after the coach’s arrival, we need to re-find the balance between defence and attack if we want to win things again this year.
