Kirby made her senior international debut against Sweden at a chilly Victoria Park in Hartlepool back in early 2014 and she could finally make her 50th appearance for the Lionesses against Latvia in England’s latest FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier.
It has been a bumpy road for Kirby who has had to battle back from lengthy injuries and serious illness in her England career to date. Ahead of Tuesday evening’s fixture against Latvia, Kirby said that she is proud and excited to potentially pick up her 50th cap for her country.
“Hopefully, I get the chance to play a part,” Kirby said when speaking in the pre-match press conference. “It’s obviously something that I am really proud of.
“I have been a part of this team for a long time now so for me to get that 50th cap would be really special and it’s just nice to be back and playing regularly for the team and with the team.
“I am really enjoying it and am really excited for it.”
Looking back on her very first appearance for the Lionesses, Kirby said that she did not think about the journey that was ahead of her and she now feels proud to have represented England on the biggest stages in football.
She said “When I look back at my first England cap, I didn’t know the experiences that I would have playing in World Cups, playing in EUROs, against the best teams in the world.
“It has been a really proud journey for me since getting my first cap and I think that I’ve definitely matured as a player and as a person.
“I just need to keep building and enjoy playing for England.”
The FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier between Latvia and England kicks-off at 6.30pm on Tuesday evening and will be broadcast live on ITV4.
