Chelsea forward Beth England says that she wants to take any chances which come her way for club and country in a bid t0 remove her unwanted ‘super sub’ tag.

The 27-year-old has scored six goals in total so far this season but five of those have come when being used as a substitute.

England is a member of Sarina Wiegman’s Lionesses squad to face Northern Ireland and Latvia during the current international window. The player came off the bench in both of last month’s FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifiers against North Macedonia and Luxembourg and she made a positive impact by netting three goals.

When speaking to FAWSL Full-Time in an England press conference, the forward said that while she has no problem with making an impact from the bench, she hopes to take any chances which come her way to remove the unwanted tag of ‘super sub’.

“I don’t think that any player wants to be tagged as a ‘super sub’ because ultimately, we want to be playing every minute that we can,” England said. “I am obviously very proud and happy to contribute to the team because that’s what we are here for, it’s a team sport and any chance that I am given, I want to take that.

“It’s not a tag that I’d like to be known for but if I am able to show that I can come on and make an impact and help the team, that’s never a bad thing, especially if I am coming on and scoring goals as well. I wouldn’t say that it is my personal preference to be a ‘super sub’.”

England has started two of her club’s opening five games of the new Barclays FA Women’s Super League season. While she has been used as a substitute on more occasions than starting games, England is taking the positives from playing with other top class players at her club every day.

She added “It is no secret that our front line at Chelsea is a very difficult one to break into, we have got some exceptional players at the club.

“For me, it is just great to be in and amongst these players every day because we all have our different strengths, we all bring something different to the team. Being able to train with such high quality players is always going to enhance anyone’s game. I am lucky that I am in a position where I train with these players day in, day out.

“It is obviously tough, every player wants to be playing every minute and when you look here (at England) at the likes of Ellen (White) and everything she has achieved for the Lionesses, it’s phenomenal and it is really tough for any player to challenge that. All I can do is keep working hard, see which areas of my game I can improve on and hope that when I get given the chance, I do my job.”

England’s latest FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia New Zealand 2023 qualifier against Northern Ireland kicks-off at 5.15pm on Saturday evening. Tickets remain on general sale and are available here.
