Chelsea face definitive fortnight without a fixture

Chelsea have slogged it through a nightmarish Christmas period, and have made it to the “winter break”, meaning two weeks off for most players.

Not only that, but when we do return, we play Plymouth in a soft FA Cup fourth round tie. The game after that is a Club World Cup semi final, also likely to be against weaker opposition.

Our next Premier League game is away at Crystal Palace on the 19th of February. At that point, it will be 4 weeks since our last league game, a perfect stretch of time for the squad to rest up, and then ease back in with some easier games. Of course a trip to Abu Dhabi isn’t ideal, but actually it works pretty well as a warm weather training camp.

The whole season was at risk of falling apart not long ago – this break comes at the perfect time, and will hopefully be followed up by a refreshed and renewed vigour.

Sometimes, the most important weeks in football are those where you don’t play a game.
