Germany kickstart their UEFA Euro 2020 campaign with a 1-0 defeat to France at the Allianz Arena. It was a disappointing display from Joachim Loew’s men, who simply weren’t able to create enough clear cut opportunities going forward. In the end, Mats Hummels’ own goal early on in the game proved to be the main difference between the two sides. Manuel Neuer 6

Manuel Neuer was beaten thrice in this game, once quite majestically by Kylian Mbappe. But the Germany goalkeeper was lucky to get away with two offside calls, while he could have done nothing to save Hummels’ own goal. Not the best of performances from the Bayern Munich shot-stopper.

Matthias Ginter 6.5

Matthias Ginter operated as the right-sided centre-back for Germany. However, he had difficulty keeping up with the French attackers, at times, especially during the early stages of the game. Settled in afterwards.

Mats Hummels 6.5

It was a mixed performance who was culpable of the early own goal while the Dortmund centre-back was clearly beaten by Mbappe for pace. At the same time, the veteran defender made a host of key defensive contributions, including the tackle of the tournament so far to prevent Mbappe from scoring.

Antonio Rudiger 6

Antonio Rudiger had a bad game this evening. He simply didn’t look comfortable enough in the left side of the back three. The Chelsea star is much better in a safer, low block that forces the attackers to take him on in a one-on-one.

Joshua Kimmich 6.5

Joshua Kimmich struggled to orient himself in the right wingback position during the early phases of the game. His poor positioning is what led to the first goal but the Bayern Munich star settled in quite well after the restart, offering solidity and creativity.

Ilkay Gundogan 6

It was not the best of performances from Ilkay Gundogan who looked quite anonymous by his lofty standards. The midfielder simply didn’t provide enough to the creativity going forward, with Germany clearly missing the more robust presence of Leon Goretzka.

Toni Kroos 7

Toni Kroos orchestrated the game rather well for the most part. He was secure in possession, barring one or two poor passes and tried to make things happen with his long balls. Unfortunately, things didn’t really work out for the Real Madrid midfielder.

Robin Gosens 6.5

Robin Gosens tried his best to offer the attacking support in the final third but was unable to get in behind Benjamin Pavard. It was a rather ineffective display from the Atalanta wingback.

Kai Havertz 5

Kai Havertz was by far Germany’s worst player this evening. He lacked ideas in the final third, often running into isolated areas and losing possession while offering minimal creativity in the final third.

Thomas Muller 7

Thomas Muller was a constant threat for the French attack, in his Ramdeuter role. Unfortunately, the Bayern Munich superstar lacked precision in his offensive game, failing to create or find any clear cut scoring opportunities, barring a header that should have at least been on target.

Serge Gnabry 7

Serge Gnabry tried his best to break the shackles of the French defence with his movements in behind the backline. The winger, though, was defended quite well by Les Bleus, who offered him very little space or time on the ball.

Timo Werner offered nothing to the table after coming on for Gnabry during the final phase of the game.

Leroy Sane, too, made Germany less effective in front of the goal after replacing Havertz in the 74th minute.
