Barcelona may have one of their signings for the summer transfer window later this year already wrapped up if an update from journalist Jose Alvarez on El Chiringuito TV is to be believed.

According to the reporter, Barcelona already have an agreement to sign Chelsea captain and defender Cesar Azpilicueta on a free transfer at the end of the season.

The 32-year-old has been with Chelsea for almost ten years now, having signed from Marseille in the summer of 2012. During his time at Stamford Bridge, the versatile defender has grown into a club icon and continues to be a key part of the setup.

However, Azpilicueta’s contract is set to run out at the end of the season and even though talks over a new deal have been held, it seems like the Spaniard has made up his mind to move on and sign for Barcelona.

The Catalans are in the market for a new right-back as Sergino Dest has failed to convince manager Xavi Hernandez. Dani Alves, despite the promising start to his second stint with the club, is 38 and will see his contract run out at the end of the season.

So, bringing in a player of Azpilicueta’s experience and know-how can work out well for the Blaugrana, at least in the short term. A leader on the field, the Spanish international can also fill in at centre-back and left-back, providing the manager with additional options.

And, if the aforementioned report from Jose Alvarez is to be believed, the move is all but done. It is claimed that the Chelsea skipper will be signing a two-year contract with Barcelona with an option of an additional month.

If true, getting a seasoned campaigner like Azpilicueta on a free transfer, who still has plenty left to offer, would be quite the coup for Barça.
